The Effectiveness of Counseling on Increasing Knowledge of Female Condom Use among Commercial Sex Workers in the Sambunggiri Localization Area, Bangka Regency

Low condom usage rates contribute to a high incidence of sexually transmitted diseases. The Sambunggiri red-light district is one of the areas in Merawang District, Bangka Regency, experiencing the highest increase in sexually transmitted disease cases. Health education is a method used to enhance an individual's knowledge and understanding. The participants in this educational activity consisted of 61 female sex workers. The activity employed a one-group pretest-posttest design. Knowledge was measured using a 32-item questionnaire covering five indicators: definition, advantages, disadvantages, usage instructions, and types of female condoms. The educational session—conducted in collaboration with the Baturusa Community Health Center (Puskesmas) on March 5, 2024—utilized a lecture-based approach to improve knowledge regarding female condom use. Data on knowledge levels before and after the session were analyzed using the Wilcoxon test. There was a difference in the knowledge of female sex workers in Sambunggiri, Bangka Regency, before and after the educational session (p-value = 0.001; <0.05). The participants' average knowledge score increased from 42% (Moderate category) at the pre-test stage to 77% (High category) at the post-test stage. The educational session was effective in improving the knowledge of female sex workers in Sambunggiri, Bangka Regency.
